by Thomas
This 12th-century gilt-bronze figure from Ireland depicts Christ adorned in a long, royal tunic known as a colobium, diverging from later Renaissance depictions where the loincloth is emphasised. The sculpture embodies the Irish-Urnes style, with intricate swirling and interlacing designs engraved on Christ's tunic, reflecting a distinctive Scandinavian, or Viking, artistic influence. Originally affixed to a wooden processional cross or shrine, the figure's raised hands and serene expression convey a triumphant and regal presence rather than one of suffering, highlighting Christ as a King. The muted golden patina of the bronze and the delicately stylised facial features further enrich its ancient yet dignified aura.
